Quarantine Unwelcome by Attackers – Attack on Ebola Facility in Liberia

Attack on Ebola Facility in Liberia – An Ebola virus facility in Monrovia, Liberia was attacked yesterday according to Liberian National Police. Many of the patients who fled the scene were infected with Ebola, but not all of them left.

Reports state that the attack wasn’t intended to free the patients suffering from Ebola, but instead was aimed at moving the quarantine somewhere else. The attackers were armed but didn’t wave guns around.

The reasoning behind the attack was fear; many people in the region hit hardest by the Ebola virus are afraid for their lives.

It was reported that the attackers stole the facility’s equipment and even mattresses. Ebola can be transmitted via exposure to bodily fluids of infected patients.

Liberian borders have been closed in an effort to contain the Ebola outbreak. Liberian authorities have also launched campaigns to help educate the population on the virus.

In March an Ebola epidemic was declared in Guinea; the disease later spread to Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. The Ebola death count grows every day and currently stands at 1145. In Liberia alone 154 people have died of the disease.

Experimental drugs including ZMapp have been tested and will be sent to treat doctors infected with the Ebola virus. The country’s request for more of the drug has been granted by the U.S. FDA.
