Local Motors makes the first 3D printed car, the Strati

Local Motors, an American company, has made the first 3D printed car in the world: the Strati. You can get on a waitlist to pre-order one on the company’s website LocalMotors.com.

The 3D printed car is made of a mix of carbon fiber and plastic, and was created and assembled in total of 5 days at a Chicago tradeshow.

The Strati is powered by electricity and weighs just around 2,200 pounds (1000 kilograms). Only a few of the car’s components (the electric motor, tires, and suspension) were made using conventional methods.  It is made of just 49 parts, compared to roughly 5000 parts in most modern cars.

The Local Motors Strati will retail for around $20,000, which seems relatively expensive given the amount of automation in the process. This Strati took a long time to build, but future models could be automated almost entirely. One would hope that once the market offers some competition, this price could be driven down significantly.
