Robin Williams Cell Phone Video before Suicide Facebook Scam -A post on Facebook entitled “Robin Williams Says Goodbye with his cell phone video before suicide” is not an actual video posted on a news website, but a fake news site that tricks users into filling out survey so scammers can get paid.
Some sites even install malware on your computer, sign you up for expensive SMS services, or spam you.
Robin Williams tragically committed suicide last week at the age of 63 years old; there have been many attempts to exploit the popularity of his passing on the web.
The Robin Williams Cell Phone Video post has gone viral on Facebook and affected millions of users. The website looks a lot like the BBC News site, which is probably what made the video collect over 24 million Facebook shares.
Facebook advises users to think before they click on links that may be suspicious:
”Never click suspicious links, even if they come from a friend or a company you know. This includes links sent on Facebook (ex: in a chat or story) or in emails. If one of your friends clicks a spam link, they could accidentally send you or tag you in spammy posts. You also shouldn’t download things (ex: a .exe file) if you aren’t sure what they are.”
