Ferguson Curfew – Missouri Governor Declares a State of Emergency – Martial Law Declared in Ferguson
Ferguson Curfew: Martial Law Declared in Ferguson – A state of emergency has been declared in Ferguson, Missouri due to the Mike Brown protests. Protests have started becoming violent and grown out of control, causing looting and destruction of property around the suburb.
Missouri’s Governor Jay Nixon has set a curfew for the city in an effort to minimize the damage. The Ferguson curfew is scheduled to be effective until 5 a.m. Sunday morning.
In response to questions about the Ferguson curfew at a press conference Governor Nixon responded:
“I am committed to making sure the forces of peace and justice prevail. We must first have and maintain peace. This is a test. The eyes of the world are watching,” Nixon said. “We cannot allow the ill will of the few to undermine the good will of the many.”
Many people believe this is an excessive use of the governor’s power, and that Martial Law in Ferguson should not be necessary. Others belive it is a good step towards regaining control of the city.
On Friday police released the name of the officer who shot Mike Brown, which may have brought more intensity to the recent protests.
According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, 40 FBI agents were combing the neigborhood door-to-door in an effort to gather more information about the Mike Brown shooting.
Officer Johnson noted that the Ferguson Curfew will not be enforced with tear gas and APCs (Armored Personnel Carriers) but will nevertheless be kept under control by police.
