Over 900 Children Hospitalized in Denver for Respiratory Illness – Human Enterovirus Puts Hundreds in the Hospital
Over 900 Children Hospitalized in Denver for Respiratory Illness – Hundreds of kids in Denver, Colorado have gotten sick with a severe respiratory illness that is antibiotic resistant and can sometimes result in life-threatening breathing issues for those with asthma.
Since August 18th, Children’s Hospital Colorado has reportedly treated over 900 children for this rare virus.
Known as Human Enterovirus 68 (HEV68) this bug has been around since 1962 where it was first observed in California. It is related to the common cold, resulting in symptoms likes coughing, sneezing, aching, and other cold-like symptoms.
It most often affects children, and due to it’s antibiotic resistant properties has to be treated with asthma remedies. There are no vaccines to prevent the sickness.
Of the 900+ Denver children hospitalized, no fatalities have been recorded.
